Amazon Fashion Styling & Image Nuance

My Role: Photo Studio Partner

Project Goal: Elevate fashion product imagery and find ways to improve photo-shooting efficiency without losing that improved image look and feel.

Project Description

My team not only changed Amazon’s Denim Shop through homepage promotions and page treatments throughout the store, but we also worked with our photo studio to address more nuanced elements of the browse experience. This included whether or not to include hands in denim product imagery (above-left). By testing model poses with and without hands shown, it became evident that images without hands made the product look more expensive, gave a slimmer silhouette and overall, appeared more aspirational.

We later approached other clothing products in a similar way, improving product imagery such as: Calvin Klein’s Men's Body Hip Brief (above-right) as well as other undergarment images. This example shows before and after elevating styling, using more athletic/tan models, and adding alternate back images to show fit.

“I’ve worked with Skottie at Amazon.com for the past 3+ years. In his role as World Wide Design Manager, I’ve been impressed by Skottie’s people management skills and his ongoing dedication to improving design quality and production processes. In addition, he’s done a great job building relationships with the many teams throughout the company that work with his team. Overall, this has led to increased efficiency, communication and client satisfaction.”
